Kids, Headaches, and Chiropractic
Headaches are becoming a widely recognized problem in younger populations. Recurrent headaches are estimated to affect 5% of children as young as three years old, and approximately 50% of children by the time they reach puberty. Increased time spent in front of screens and looking down at iPhones may be a significant contributing factor to the increased prevalence of headaches in children.
A study published in January 2021 in the journal, “Chiropractic and Manual Therapies,” looked at the effect of Chiropractic care for children experiencing headaches. Chiropractic has previously been shown to be effective for headaches in adult populations, but to date very few randomized controlled trials have been conducted in pediatric populations suffering from headaches.
What Was Studied?
199 Pediatric patients were recruited for participation in the trial. 100 were randomized into the control group and 99 were randomized into the placebo group. All participants received verbal and written instructions on ways to help alleviate headaches on their own whether they were in the active treatment group or the control placebo group.
What Were the Results?
At the completion of the study, the group of children that were receiving Chiropractic care experienced far less headaches and less days experiencing headaches than the group that received the placebo procedure. Interestingly, even though the group receiving Chiropractic care experienced less headaches overall, when they did develop headaches on rare occasion, the severity of the headaches was the same as before. Authors of the study concluded based on the sample size of the study and the results that Chiropractic was a practical and cost effective means of managing headaches in pediatric populations.
What Can We Learn From This Study?
We have had a great deal of success with both adults and children who suffer from headaches especially when it comes to reducing frequency of headaches, so this study comes as no surprise to us. However, it is good to see larger studies in pediatric populations being conducted. With the amount of time children are spending in front of iPads, computers, and gaming systems and the negative effects it is having on their posture, headaches are a very real problem in children and not something that should be ignored. Chiropractic can be a very effective means of alleviating the issue in children.
